Layering Clothes For Winter

Layering Clothes For Winter

Winter can be harsh. And it can get really cold! Especially here in Canada. With global warming on the rise, winters get cooler each year.

Now before winter even starts, we’re fretting over what to wear during the season. At times, it might even feel like looking good is reserved just for the summer. But trust us, that’s really not the case.

Where warmth is not only a priority but a need, style too, can integrate itself into your wardrobe. Although winter fashion on Instagram can be deceptive - with models looking ludicrously good posing in just a coat - we’ve got some practical, hands on tips for layering clothes fashionably for your daily routine, like a pro!

The First Layer:

Essentially, the first layer is where the fun begins. This piece determines the tone for the rest of your outfit. Best to go with a solid, neutral piece that is cohesive. We recommend to never compromise on fitting!

This layer should be super form fitting, light, and hugging your body perfectly. This piece will only reveal itself in flashes – typically at the neck, cuff, or possibly the hemline. For extremely cold weather, you might want to go with a thermal.

The Mid Layer:

This is where things get interesting! The mid layer is the centerpiece of the show. It is the piece of clothing that will be shown off the most.

What’s most important is that this piece is in perfect sync with the first layer. You definitely don’t want any color clashes. Or anything that looks mismatched.

This is also where vests, sweaters, crop tops, or even knotted button downs come in! The range and diversity is insane. You could wear anything from a blazer to a cardigan. These are all great options for this layer.

But, you do need to be thinking about the texture, and the color of the patterns you may be wearing.

Although it doesn’t have to be a super tight fit, it should still be well fitted, and comfortable so you look your absolute best.

You could even stack on an additional mid layer.

The Outer Layer:

Last, but not the least – the outer layer. By the time you reach this stage, don’t lose motivation! Even though your outer layer is removable, and you will most probably shrug it off once you are indoors, don’t underestimate its importance!

You have a variety of options here too. Choose between a jacket, coat, cape, vest or a shawl! We always recommend going for the oversized look when it comes to your last layer. It makes you look cozy, and feel warm. Plus, you have space to move.

The most important component of the outer layer is the length. The length should be assessed relative to the rest of your outfit. If it is a complete mismatch, it will end up looking super off.

Typically, we go the longer route. But a crop jacket can work wonders too. It emphasizes on the fitted layers underneath, and complements your silhouette.
